Civil forfeiture is when a law enforcement agency seizes money or property they believe to be linked to illicit activity. Even when there isn’t a link, the property is seized and the owner is forced into litigation that could take months or even years to get the property back. Often, cash, phones, jewelry, vehicles, and other valuables are taken and never returned and sometimes never even cataloged. People should not have their belongings taken when there is no link between the items seized and the alleged offense. Finally, these laws are increasingly under scrutiny as they should be.
